The Purpose of Jalsa Salana

Summary of Friday Sermon Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V(aba)

In his sermon delivered at the occasion of the 38th Jalsa Salana at Islamabad, U.K. Huzoor(aba) prayed that with the Grace and Mercy of Allah may all the participants of the Jalsa Salana be the recipients of the Blessings for which the Promised Messiah(as) has prayed. Hazrat Masih Mauood(as) had instituted the Jalsa Salana for the purpose of moral and spiritual training of his Community. Huzoor(aba) stated that we should not be satisfied by mere verbal oaths of Initiation but should strive for our moral and spiritual uplift. Huzoor(aba) mentioned some of the major purposes of the Jalsa: first, that the love of material things of this world should vanish from our hearts; second, that we should be totally immersed in the love of the Holy Prophet(sa) for this is the only means to attain the love of Allah; third, that we should try our best to serve our fellow beings. Other things mentioned with respect to the Jalsa are that the new comers to the Community may meet their brothers who had joined the community earlier. Also, that we should pray for those dear ones who had departed during the previous year. Huzoor(aba) stated that there are many other benefits to be derived form this blessed gathering. Ties of kinship are strengthened, new friendships are formed, new relations are formed, we benefit from each others prayers, and most important of all, we become the recipients of the blessings of the prayers of Hazrat Masih Mauood(as).

Huzur(aba) said that the participants should be very attentive during all the proceedings of the Jalsa. Do not be impressed merely by the melodious voice and powerful language of the speakers but try to understand the deep messages behind the words that will help us transform our lives for the better. If this does not happen then we are not fulfilling the purpose of the Jalsa. We should be filled with the feelings of love for our brethren. If this does not happen then we are not fulfilling the purpose of the Jalsa. Huzoor(aba) stated that if you want to come here to cause disorder and chaos instead of promoting love and brotherhood then it is better that you do not come. Huzoor(aba) instructed all to say Assalamoalaikum to each other every time you meet each other. This will help in the promotion of love and brotherhood.

Huzur(aba) gave several instructions pertaining to the behaviour during the Jalsa among them was the special attention we should pay to the etiquettes of the mosque. Huzoor(aba) said that we should spend our time praising Allah and invoking the Blessings of Allah upon the Holy Prophet(sa). We should pay special attention to the congregational prayers. Members of the local Jamaat should consider it mandatory to participate in the Jalsa barring some emergency situations. Be very attentive during all the speeches. There should be no shops open during the Jalsa Proceedings. We should not indulge in idle gossip. We should obey all the traffic and other laws of the locality. Ladies should pay particular attention to the observance of Purdah. Be mindful of cleanliness. Avoid wastage of food. Huzoor(aba) again reminded the hosts that they should adopt the high standards of hospitality and treat the guests of the Promised Messiah(as) with love and kindness. Huzoor(aba) also reminded the guests that they should also be prepared to make some sacrifices and be thankful for whatever arrangements their hosts are able to make for them.

In the end, Huzoor(aba) prayed that may we be the recipients of the Allah’s Blessings and be able to attain His nearness. Aameen
