What’s New at Al Islam?

What's New in Urdu

Address at the reception by City of GlasgowHadrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih V

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad at, Khalifatul Masih V, the Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was invited to the City of Glasgow Reception on 7th March, 2009. He spoke there about world peace. He also spoke about scientific development and the prophecies in the Holy Quran. He said:

“Those who do not believe in God deem the inventions and development of today to be the result of man’s evolutionary progress and effort. Consequently, it is thought that man himself is the architect of new avenues of progress.

But as an Ahmadi Muslim and a believer in a God Who is the Knower of the Unseen, I will say that this development was in fact destined for this age.

God Almighty foretold us in the Holy Qur’an which is the book of law revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), that this progress was pre-destined for man. To illustrate, I shall now quote a few examples from this Book.” The main body of the address is reproduced from April, 2009 Review of Religions and can be read online by clicking here.

The Bible, The Quran and Science

The Holy Quran

“The disbelievers say: This Quran is naught but a lie that Muhammad has fabricated, and other people have helped him with it. They have, thereby, perpetrated an injustice and an untruth. They also say: These are fables of the ancients which he has got someone to write down for him and they are recited to him morning and evening. Say to them: The Quran has been revealed by Him Who knows every secret that is in the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is Most Forgiving, Ever Merciful.” (Al Quran 25:5-7)

Many Christian writers and clergy claim that the Holy Quran is borrowed from the Bible. Allah refutes this allegation in the words, “The Quran has been revealed by Him Who knows every secret that is in the heavens and the earth.” The most effective proofs of this Quranic claim were to come after the scientific revolution. Dr. Maurice Bucaille’s book is indeed a landmark achievement in this regards. However, it needs to be understood that the Holy Quran is a book of ‘religion’ and not a ‘book of science’ and Bucaille’s book is a book of ‘metaphysics’ and not of science. Metaphysics is a term, which means literally ‘what comes after physics.’ So, it is a branch of philosophy that studies the ultimate structure and constitution of reality, correlating religion and science. A certain amount of humility is in order to comprehend the distinction between religion, science and metaphysics. In the words of Sir Charles Darwin, as he quoted Francis Bacon from his book Advancement of learning in the later editions of Origin of Species to establish the proper relationship between religion and natural science:

“To conclude, therefore, let no man out of weak conceit of sobriety, or an ill-applied moderation, think or maintain, that a man can search too far or be too well-studied in the book of God’s word, or in the book of God’s works; divinity or philosophy; but rather let men endeavor an endless progress or proficiency in both.”

A History of Warfare of Science with theology in Christendom
by Andrew Dickson White

Because the suppression of scientific thought by the medieval Church represents one of blackest periods of human history, many scholars have studied this period with great care. Worth special mention is a remarkable two-volume treatise by Andrew Dickson White entitled A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom, published in 1896. The whole text of the two volumes of the book can be read on www.archive.org. Here is one example:

“The doctrine of the spherical shape of the earth, and therefore the existence of the antipodes, was bitterly attacked by theologians who asked: ‘Is there anyone so senseless as to believe that crops and trees grow downwards? . . . that the rains and snow fall upwards?’ The great authority of St Augustine held the Church firmly against the idea of the antipodes and for a thousand years it was believed that there could not be human beings on the opposite side of the earth – even if the earth had opposite sides. In the sixth century, Procopius of Gaza brought powerful theological guns to bear on the issue: there could not be an opposite side, he declared, because for that Christ would have had to go there and suffer a second time. Also, there would have had to exist a duplicate Eden, Adam, Serpent, and Deluge. But that being clearly wrong, there could not be any antipodes. QED!”

The Intelligent Design movement, the Evolution wars in USA and efforts during the intrusive reign of President Zia ul Haq in Pakistan are prime examples of futile struggle between religion and science. There is a popular saying, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” In that spirit it would be worthwhile to read this book.

Islam and Science – Religious orthodoxy and battle for rationality
by Prof. Pervez Amirali Hoodbhoy

Prof. Dr. Abdus Salam

This is a book by Pervez Amirali Hoodbhoy with foreword by Dr. Abdus Salam. It is very useful book to demonstrate that the science is universal. Dr Salam wrote in the foreword of the book, “There is only one universal science, its problems and modalities are international and there is no such thing as Islamic science just as there is no Hindu science, no Jewish science, no Confucian science, nor Christian science.”

It is important to make the distinction between religion, science and metaphysics otherwise we stand the grave risk of reigniting warfare of science with theology in Christendom or in the Muslim countries. To read the review of the book by Dr. Zia H Shah

Persecution News
A sample from the vernacular press – newsreport of May 2009

The vernacular press, with some rare exceptions, has played a very negative role for over half a century in the victimization of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Pakistan. It has propagated hostile false news, promoted sectarian strife, prompted its shallow readership to blatantly violate Ahmadis’ human rights and urged the state to do all that it can to persecute this harmless religious community. The Urdu press finds it convenient to routinely give space to any petty mulla to declare: Qadianis are enemies of Islam and Pakistan. Some leading dailies can boast more than two anti-Ahmadiyya news items per day. Most of them print special editions on anti-Ahmadiyya theme on any excuse. Last month they highlighted this theme at the occasion of the conference in the Badshahi Mosque and also on the death anniversary of Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, whom one of these papers called the ‘Mujahid’ of the End of Prophethood (The daily Pakistan of April 4, 2009), while another unabashedly declared that “It was shaheed Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto who drove the last nail in the coffin of Qadianiat”. (The daily Jinnah of April 4, 2009).

One of these dailies is the Ausaf in Lahore (Chief Editor: Mehtab Khan; Editor: Mohsin Bilal Khan). It recently tasked one of its staff reporters to fabricate a story regarding Ahmadi students in medical colleges, and came up with three ‘news’ items under a three-column headline on May 9, 2009. The following is the brief account of it. First, the headline:

“Qadianis are enemies of Islam. They should not be admitted in medical colleges”

The Ausaf attributes all three stories to a ‘lady reporter’, without mentioning her name. The malicious view given in the main headline is attributed to ‘students’ although the Ausaf’s record provides ample evidence that this is also its own opinion. This ‘lady reporter’ is said to have visited the medical colleges at Lahore but her opening salvo was again a willful fabrication: “The students of medical colleges express extreme anger over the discreet transfer of Qadiani students who had been expelled from the Faisalabad Medical College.” Obviously the Ausaf aims at reopening the Faisalabad issue of last year. Who, other than the extremist and sectarian clerics’ lobby, is it working for?

It is relevant to mention that only two days earlier, on May 7, 2009, this newspaper published a story under a three-column headline in which it reported that the issue of Ahmadi students of the Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad had been completely suppressed by ‘hidden powers in utmost secrecy’. The Ausaf disclosed the names of all the Ahmadi students, their roll numbers, their home addresses and their new locations.

Pakistan is facing a mortal threat from forces of obscurantism and extremism. Who energizes these forces? Some of them occupy offices of such newspapers. Let this come on the record.

The indispensible God Hypothesis
(by Zia H Shah)

If there is a ‘Personal God’ that hears human prayers then there has to be a way for the deity to influence the physical world without breaking the laws of nature and making the study of science futile. Whereas the 19th century physics, in its arrogance, had shut the door to ‘Personal God’ the 20th century physics has widely opened it again. The article can be reviewed in the fall, 2008 volume of Muslim Sunrise online.

Scientific Advancements and Signs of the Latter Days
(By Dr. Kaleem Malik)

“All praise is due to Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. His is all praise, as in the beginning, so in the end (the latter days). He is the Wise the All-Aware.” (Al Quran 34:2-3)

The remarkable miracle of the Holy Quran is that it is a living and a dynamic book and the social, political and scientific developments of the recent centuries have continued to prove the truth of this glorious book. Dr. Malik presents evidence from science for the Holy Quran. However, just like Bucaille’s book this article is about religion, philosophy and metaphysics and not about science per se. The failure to make this distinction can reignite the futile debates of medieval Islamic history from 12th to 15th centuries or create a trap for the Muslims like the warring camps between creationism and evolution in USA. The article that is in two parts is published in October 2006 and November 2006 Review of Religions available online.
