Obedience – Heaven’s Command, Earth’s Order

Obedience is the cornerstone of both spiritual excellence and worldly prosperity. It is through obedience that humanity attains humility, and humility leads to self-effacement which is the ultimate station of devotion to the Divine.

Allah declares in the Holy Quran:

“Whoso obeys Allah and the Messenger shall be among those upon whom Allah has bestowed His favours, the Prophets, the Faithful ones, the Martyrs and the Righteous; and excellent companions these are” (4:70).

These divine rewards await those who submit to Allah’s guidance, while in the secular realm, obedience ensures organizational efficiency and social harmony.

The Essence of Good Deeds

The Promised Messiah(as) profoundly declared that the doing of good deeds is nothing but obedience. This means that without submission to divine commandments and lawful authority, no action, however virtuous in appearance can be considered truly righteous. The Holy Quran repeatedly emphasizes obedience to the Prophet(sa), commanding:

“Say, ‘If you love Allah, follow me: then will Allah love you and forgive you your faults. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful'” (3:32).

This obedience transcends the Prophet’s earthly life; following his Sunnah and Hadith after his demise fulfills the Quranic injunction, for otherwise these verses would stand abrogated.

Obedience and Khilafat

The promise of Khilafat is conditional upon two prerequisites: faith and good works. Allah states:

“Allah has promised to those among you who believe and do good works” (24:56).

The “good works” referenced here are explicitly explained as obedience in the verses surrounding Ayatul Istikhlaf. Remarkably, in seven consecutive verses of Surah Al-Noor (24:52-58), the word “obey” appears seven times, underscoring that obedience to Allah, His Messenger, and the Khalifa constitutes the “good works” required for this divine promise. Without obedience, there can be no good works, and without good works, the blessing of Khilafat is withdrawn. History bears witness: when early Muslims became disobedient to the Khalifa despite their faith, the era of Khilafat ar-Rashida came to an end.

The Prophetic Command

The Holy Prophet(sa) emphasized that obedience to constituted authority is fundamental to Islamic social order.

He declared:

“He who obeys me has obeyed Allah and he who disobeys me has disobeyed Allah, and he who obeys the Ameer has obeyed me and he who disobeys the Ameer has disobeyed me”.

In another narration, the Prophet(sa) stated:

“It is a duty upon a Muslim man to listen and obey authorities, whether he likes it or not, unless they command sinful disobedience”.

This principle establishes that obedience is obligatory in matters of righteousness (ma’ruf), extending to parents, the Khalifa, the administrative system (nizaam), and all lawful leadership.

The Promised Messiah(as)  on Obedience

The Promised Messiah(as) made obedience a condition of Bai’at, requiring followers to pledge obedience to every ma’ruf command until their last breath. His own life exemplified perfect obedience to the Holy Prophet(sa) at every step. The Promised Messiah(as) taught that spending one’s youth in the worship of Allah, self-reformation, and obedience to God brings such reward that even in old age, when physical capacity diminishes, angels continue recording the same spiritual actions.

He warned his community:

If you fail to adopt righteousness and partake fully of that virtue which God Almighty desires from you, then you will be the first to be destroyed by God Almighty, as you have accepted a truth but denied it in practice”.

The Consequences of Disobedience

The chaos pervading families, societies, and the world today is a direct consequence of disobedience. When people fail to submit to legitimate authority, disorder, crime, anarchy, and moral corruption flourish. Many resort to selective obedience, creating what can be termed “dynamic stagnation”, activity without blessing, effort without success. The modern concepts of unbridled democracy and unrestricted free speech have corrupted minds and souls, fostering rebellion against rightful authority and eroding the very foundations of social cohesion. The Prophet(sa) warned against such breakdown, emphasizing that obedience was necessary to transform a society accustomed to chaos and clan rivalries into one of discipline and order.

The Path Forward

Success depends on the quality of our obedience and our ability to listen and follow directions.

Allah promises:

“Whoso obeys Allah and His Messenger, and fears Allah, and takes Him as a shield for protection, it is they who will be successful” (24:53).

The coming of a Prophet is the grace of God, and the appointment of a Khalifa is the mercy of God. We must demonstrate complete submission to Allah, the Messenger, the Khalifa, the Jamaat system, and our parents, for this is the pathway to divine pleasure.

As Allah reminds us:

“Your Lord has taken it upon Himself to show mercy, so that whoso among you does evil ignorantly, and repents thereafter and amends, then He is Most Forgiving, Merciful” (6:55).

Let us therefore embrace obedience as the ultimate good deed and the key to both spiritual elevation and worldly triumph.
