People often seek a prayer that guarantees acceptance. Yet little attention is given to reforming conduct. This imbalance weakens spiritual growth. The Holy Prophet(sa) said that all humans err, but the best are those who repent. The aim is not perfection, but progress.
The Holy Prophet(sa) also said “All human beings are sinners; the best of the sinners are those who repent.” (Ibn Majah). What this means is that we must strive to graduate from being recurrent sinners to becoming recovering sinners. We must move from repeated sin to conscious recovery. To “make a momin into a momin” in the terminology of the Promised Messiah(as) is to take a mere nominal believer and turn him into a true, living believer whose faith permeates character, worship, and daily life.
This journey begins with Istighfar. Without it, the ability to repent fades. God created us in the best mold. La qad khalaqnal insane fi ahsanay taqweem (At-Tin 95:5) but man fell and degraded himself following his own base inclinations and eagerly immersed himself into worldly corruption. Therefore the need for continual spiritual sustenance. That sustenance depends on constant seeking of forgiveness.
Repentance is not words alone. It must be completed through obedience and good deeds.
The Promised Messiah(as) said :
Amaal kay saat taubah ki takmil karo ; Complete your repentance with righteous deeds
The process is clear. Stop the sin. Resolve not to return. Seek sincere forgiveness. Repair the harm. Divine mercy is promised to those who repent and reform. “…whoso repents after his transgression and amends, then will Allah surely turn to him in mercy; verily, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful.” (Al-Ma’idah, 5:40) .
The Quran defines true believers. They are humble in prayer. They avoid vain things. They give in charity. They guard their purity. They fulfill trust. They protect their prayers. These are the successful, (Al-Mu’minun 23: 2-12)
Spiritual growth unfolds in stages. It mirrors physical development. (Al-Mu’minun, 23:13 -15). Just as the body develops step by step, so does the soul. It begins with repentance. It grows through worship, praise, and devotion. It culminates in nearness to God.
At this stage, a believer serves others. One enjoins good and forbids evil. One guards the limits set by God. (At-Taubah 9:111-112).
Righteousness is not ritual alone. It is faith joined with action. It includes charity, fulfilling promises, and steadfastness in hardship. ( Al-Baqarah 2:178). A complete moral picture highlights submission, truthfulness, patience, humility, charity, purity, and remembrance of God. (Al-Ahzab 33:36)
All humanity comes from a single soul. All relationships carry responsibility. We should be mindful of our duty to Allah and of our obligations in respect of ties of kinship. The Quran reminds us that Allah watches overall. (An-Nisa 4:2)
The message is direct. Do not rely on words alone. Reform conduct. Seek forgiveness constantly. Complete repentance with action. Walk the path of steady growth. This is the way to nearness and lasting faith.
Allah says to The Prophet(sa) announce to the believers ‘If you love Allah, follow me: then will Allah love you and forgive you your faults. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful.’ (Aal-e-Imran 3:32). In the commentary of this verse The Promised Messiah(as) says : God has sent the Prophets (peace be upon them) into this world for the very purpose that their likeness be established in the world. If this were not so, then prophethood would be rendered meaningless. A Prophet does not come so that he may be worshipped; rather, he comes so that people may follow his example, adopt his qualities, and, by effacing themselves in him, become as though they themselves are the same.
The key is obedience and submission. Not as blind compliance, but as a conscious, willing alignment of one’s will with divine guidance. True obedience means more than outward conformity; it requires an inner transformation where a person molds their thoughts, desires, and actions according to the example set by the Prophets. Submission is the surrender of the ego. Letting go of personal pride, preferences, and resistance to embody higher moral and spiritual truths.
Through this dynamic process, a person does not lose individuality but refines it. By consistently following the prophetic model, one gradually develops the same virtues: humility, compassion, truthfulness, patience, and unwavering devotion to God. In this sense, obedience becomes a path to spiritual likeness. Not imitation in form alone, but a deep resemblance in character. This is how the purpose of prophethood is fulfilled: that people internalize and reflect the light brought by The Prophet(sa) in their own lives.
