Reviving the Heart Through Obedience

In The Holy Quran Allah says

“O ye who believe, respond to Allah and His Messenger when he calls you that he may bring you to life, and know that Allah surely supervenes between a man and his mind and that He it is unto Whom you shall be gathered.” (Al Anfal 8:25)

Allah calls the believers to a life that is higher than mere existence. He says that the call of Allah and His Messenger is a call “to that which gives you life.” This life is faith, guidance and inner transformation. It revives the dead heart and reforms the whole person.

Outward life can exist without faith. The Quran  describes such people as spiritually lifeless. In other places, it likens them to cattle,

They are like cattle; only more astray. They are utterly heedless.” (Al A’raf 7:180).

The words “that which gives you life” mean it corrects belief. It purifies morals. It grants eternal life in the Hereafter. It also revives a community. It produces justice, unity and courage in the path of Allah.

The Companions(ra) experienced this directly at Badr. They were few and weak in worldly means. Yet obedience to the call of the Prophet(sa) brought them strength and victory. In every age, the same principle stands. Whenever believers answer the living call of Prophethood, they rise from decline to spiritual life.

The verse then declares that Allah comes between a person and his heart. In Quranic language, the heart is the inner self. It is the seat of thought, intention and feeling. The verse teaches that the heart is never fully in human control. Allah controls the inner states of people. No one believes or disbelieves except by His leave, and no intention becomes firm without His enabling grace

Ibn Kathir relates that Allah prevents a person from making any decision except by His permission. Another explanation is that He stands between one and the desires of the heart. He protects the believer from being dragged by lower impulses.

This truth creates urgency. A person must respond quickly to the call of Allah and His Messenger. ( In our times to Khalifatul Masih) If he delays, his heart can harden. Sin, heedlessness or trials may intervene. Then he may no longer encounter the same gentleness or openness.

Hadith reports that a Companion once continued his voluntary prayer when the Prophet(sa) called him. Later the Prophet(sa) taught him that obedience to the call of the Messenger takes precedence. This incident reflects the spirit of the verse. The believer gives immediate response. He does not postpone obedience in the name of personal choice, habit or even optional devotion.

The statement about the heart contains both hope and fear. It gives hope because Allah can turn any heart from sin to repentance. Even a distant soul can be brought near by a single act of Divine grace. It inspires fear because those who persist in rejecting guidance may lose the ability to respond. Their hearts may become sealed.

The verse concludes by reminding us that all will ultimately be brought before Allah. This gathering will expose the condition of every heart. Those who answered the call will find life, light and mercy. Those who turned away despite knowing will face loss that they chose for themselves.

The believer who understands this verse adopts a certain stance. He listens attentively whenever Divine guidance reaches him. He responds with prompt obedience. He also prays constantly for firmness of heart. The Prophet(sa) used to say that every heart lies between two fingers of the Gracious God. He asked Allah to keep his heart firm upon faith.

In this single verse, Allah joins command and explanation. He calls, He shows the purpose of the call and He unveils the reality of the heart in His hand. Whoever understands this will hasten to respond, asking Allah to keep his heart firm upon guidance.
