Spend out of what We have provided for them – Wa mimmā razaqnāhum yunfiqūn

The Holy Qur’an describes the Muttaqi (righteous) as those who believe in the unseen, establish Salat, and spend out of what We have provided for them ( Wa mimmā razaqnāhum yunfiqūn) . The sequence is deeply meaningful. {Commentary by Promised Messiah(as)]. Faith settles the heart. Prayer disciplines the soul. Then comes action. Spending is not an afterthought. It is a natural outcome of a life oriented toward God. (Al Baqarah 2:4)

The words “out of what We have provided” shift the entire perspective. Nothing truly belongs to us. Wealth, knowledge, time, and ability are all trusts. A person who understands this does not wait for abundance before giving. Waiting for a perfect future is a subtle form of neglect. It is a failure to recognize the sacredness of what is already in one’s hands.

Many people say they will give when they have more. This thinking is flawed. Divine wisdom teaches the opposite. One must give from what is present. Even a little carries weight when it is given sincerely. The act of giving creates capacity within the soul. It refines intention. It builds reliance on God.

The story of Moses(as)  at the valley of Tuwa offers a powerful lesson (TaHa 20:19-22) . God asked him what was in his hand. It was only a staff. Ordinary. Familiar. Limited in apparent value. Yet when it was surrendered to God, it became a sign of power. It transformed beyond imagination. This shows that transformation does not begin with what we lack. It begins with what we already possess.

The question then becomes personal. What is in your hand. What have you been given. Skills. Knowledge. Influence. Compassion. Resources. Each of these is a means to serve humanity. When used in the path of God, they are multiplied in unseen ways. This is not only a spiritual promise but a lived reality.

The Qur’an affirms this principle. If you are grateful, I will surely multiply them unto you. (Ibrahim 14:8) Gratitude is not only a feeling. It is expressed through use. To use a blessing for good is to thank the Giver. To withhold it is ingratitude.

The Holy Prophet(sa) said,

“Charity does not decrease wealth.”

This teaching removes fear. It reframes loss as gain. Giving does not diminish. It elevates. It opens doors that calculation alone cannot perceive.

The Promised Messiah(as) wrote,

“Man is not created for himself alone, but for the service of others.”

This statement captures the moral essence of spending. True life is found in service. True growth lies in sacrifice.

There is also a balance to be maintained. The human being is not only intellect. Nor is he only emotion. The heart must remain soft. The mind must remain clear. Compassion must guide reason. Reason must discipline compassion. When both are aligned, giving becomes wise and impactful.

To spend in the way of God is to trust Him. It is to let go of fear. It is to believe that what is given in sincerity returns in forms beyond measure.

The real question is not how much we have. The real question is what we are doing with what we have been given.
