The Promised Messiah(as) said : God Almighty declared in the beginning age that I am your God and now again, in the Latter Days, He has said that ʾanā al-mawjūd [I am present]. Remember that He is the Guide. If He were to let go, everyone would become an atheist. Thus, He continues to provide proof of His Being and this age is in particular need of this. (Malfuzat, Vol. 10, p. 150)
In April 1906, The Promised Messiah(as) made a claim that stops the reader. He said:
“God Almighty Himself wants to prove His existence once again, just as a sample of Divine manifestation was shown on the Mount [in the time of Moses]. In this very fashion will it be shown again today.” (Malfuzat, Volume VIII, page 365).
God does not leave a doubting world to argue itself into faith. He answers with events. Those events came from the sky, from disease and from the earth itself.
Moses(as) once asked to see his Lord. The reply was not a face. It was a manifestation. Allah says in Al A’raf 7:144:
Fa lamma tajalla rabbuhu lil jabali ja’alahu dakkan wa kharra Musa sa’iqa: And when his Lord manifested Himself on the mountain, He broke it into pieces and Moses fell down unconscious.
In the same passage The Promised Messiah(as) said that the people of the world would not stand corrected except by witnessing such manifestations. The Quran states the law behind this in Ha Mim As Sajdah 41:54: Sanureehim aayaatinaa fil aafaaqi wa fee anfusihim hattaa yatabayyana lahum annahul haqq, awalam yakfi bi rabbika annahu ‘alaa kulli shay’in shaheed: Soon We will show them Our Signs in all parts of the earth, and among their own people until it becomes manifest to them that it is the truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord is Witness over all things?
Such signs carry weight because they are announced first. The Promised Messiah(as) explained: “Prior to the event, God discloses His decree to His chosen ones and informs them that on such time and on such day He has decreed for such an event to occur.” (Malfuzat, Volume II, page 33). He told his listeners that God had manifested “not one, two, or 200 Signs in my favour, but tens of thousands of them.” He added that Signs appeared for him “from heaven and from the earth as well.” (Malfuzat, Volume VIII, page 146).
The first sign came from the sky. The Quran speaks of the moon being eclipsed and of the sun and the moon being brought together. Allah says in Al Qiyamah 75:9:
Wa khasafal qamar: And the moon is eclipsed.
He says in Al Qiyamah 75:10:
Wa jumi’ash shamsu wal qamar: And the sun and the moon are brought together.
In 1894, in the month of Ramadan, both bodies were eclipsed. The Promised Messiah(as) reminded his audience that an authentic hadith had foretold this for the time of the Mahdi and the Messiah. Then he asked whether anyone could say he did not witness it. (Malfuzat, Volume VIII, page 146).
The second sign came from the earth in the form of disease. The Promised Messiah(as) said:
“And the Sign of the earth is that which appeared in the form of the plague.” (Malfuzat, Volume VIII, page 323).
He tied it to the Quran. Allah says in Bani Isra’il 17:59:
Wa im min qaryatin illaa nahnu muhlikoohaa qabla yawmil qiyaamati aw mu’azzibooha ‘azaaban shadeedaa, kaana zaalika fil kitaabi mastooraa: There is not a township but We shall destroy it before the Day of Resurrection, or punish it with a severe punishment.
That is written down in the Book. He also recalled the prophecy of an epidemic so fierce that “seven out of ten people would die.” (Malfuzat, Volume VIII, page 146).
The third sign shook the ground. The Holy Prophet(sa) named frequent earthquakes among the marks of the final era. Sahih al Bukhari, Kitab al Istisqa, Hadith 1036:
Laa taqoomus saa’atu hattaa yuqbadal ‘ilmu wa takthuraz zalaazilu wa yataqaarabaz zamaanu wa tazharul fitanu wa yakthurul harju: The Hour will not come until knowledge is taken away, earthquakes become frequent, time passes quickly, trials appear and bloodshed increases.
The Quran describes the same upheaval. Allah says in Az Zilzal 99:2:
Izaa zulzilatil ardu zilzaalahaa: When the earth is shaken with her violent shaking.
The Promised Messiah(as) pointed to the quakes of his day and asked:
“Now see these two earthquakes that have occurred. Was the like of them ever seen or heard of before?” (Malfuzat, Volume VIII, page 394).
He also shared a small story. Muhammad Ismail, then studying at medical college, told him that an atheist student there began shouting “Ram! Ram!” when the earthquake of April 4 struck. When the shaking passed and he regained his composure, he said he had made a mistake in saying Ram! Ram!. The Promised Messiah(as) drew the lesson:
“It is not the practice of God Almighty to show His face to anyone like a human being, but He gives proof of His existence through mighty Signs.” (Malfuzat, Volume VIII, page 426).
The signs have not gone quiet. This year 2026, the earth has been restless. On June 24, a double earthquake of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela, and officials reported more than 6,300 dead. In August, a magnitude 7.4 quake hit western Colombia, and a glacial collapse on the Nepal and China border sent floods down the valleys, leaving hundreds dead and thousands missing. Disease has returned as well. An Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus was declared on May 15, and by September 21 the Democratic Republic of the Congo had recorded 3,759 confirmed deaths. The World Health Organization reported on global trends in cholera, meningitis and plague. War adds to the toll. The United Nations General Assembly closed its high level week amid strikes on nuclear infrastructure in Iran and Ukraine . Not every disaster is a sign, and it is not for us to assign each one a meaning. But the lesson he drew still stands. When the ground gives way, the heart looks upward.
Eclipse, plague and earthquake. Each was foretold before it came. Yet The Promised Messiah(as) did not treat the matter as closed. He said:
“God Almighty has informed me that a severe earthquake is coming. That day will be an extraordinary day for the world when people will realize that God exists.” (Malfuzat, Volume VIII, page 427).
Consider the student who cried out when the ground moved and took it back when it stopped. Which was the truer voice? And if God is willing to prove Himself once again, will we be convinced before the mountain moves?
