The Promised Messiah emphasizes that there is now one routing number or prescription for us to seek salvation and love of Allah. It is complete devotion and obedience to The Prophet(sa). As Allah says to The Prophet(sa):
قُلۡ اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ تُحِبُّوۡنَ اللّٰہَ فَاتَّبِعُوۡنِیۡ یُحۡبِبۡکُمُ اللّٰہُ وَ یَغۡفِرۡ لَکُمۡ ذُنُوۡبَکُمۡ ؕ وَ اللّٰہُ غَفُوۡرٌ رَّحِیۡمٌ
Say, ‘If you love Allah, follow me: then will Allah love you and forgive you your faults. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful.’ (3:32)
Islam is a perfect religion, one that guides us in every matter of life. It teaches us that to be a true Muslim, one must have sincere love for the Holy Prophet(sa). The Holy Qur’an states:
قُلۡ اِنۡ کَانَ اٰبَآؤُکُمۡ وَ اَبۡنَآؤُکُمۡ وَ اِخۡوَانُکُمۡ وَ اَزۡوَاجُکُمۡ وَ عَشِیۡرَتُکُمۡ وَ اَمۡوَالُ ۣ اقۡتَرَفۡتُمُوۡہَا وَ تِجَارَۃٌ تَخۡشَوۡنَ کَسَادَہَا وَ مَسٰکِنُ تَرۡضَوۡنَہَاۤ اَحَبَّ اِلَیۡکُمۡ مِّنَ اللّٰہِ وَ رَسُوۡلِہٖ وَ جِہَادٍ فِیۡ سَبِیۡلِہٖ فَتَرَبَّصُوۡا حَتّٰی یَاۡتِیَ اللّٰہُ بِاَمۡرِہٖ ؕ وَ اللّٰہُ لَا یَہۡدِی الۡقَوۡمَ الۡفٰسِقِیۡنَ
Say, if your fathers, and your sons, and your brethren, and your wives, and your kinsfolk, and the wealth you have acquired, and the trade whose dullness you fear, and the dwellings which you love are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His cause, then wait until Allah comes with His judgment; and Allah guides not the disobedient people. (9:24)
The Prophet Muhammad(sa) also highlighted the ncessity of having love for the messenger of Allah:
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ح وَحَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم “ لاَ يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ وَالِدِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ ”
(صحیح البخاری، کتاب الایمان، باب حُبُّ الرَّسُولِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مِنَ الإِيمَانِ، حدیث ۱۵)
Narrated Anas(ra):
The Prophet(sa) said “None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind.”
(Sahih Bukhari, the Book of Faith, Chapter: the love of the Messenger(sa) is part of faith, hadith #15)
It is necessary to love the Holy Prophet Muhammad(sa) more than our own lives. There is an interesting narration about Hazrat Umar(ra) that sheds light on this aspect of faith:
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي حَيْوَةُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَقِيلٍ، زُهْرَةُ بْنُ مَعْبَدٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَدَّهُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ هِشَامٍ، قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَهْوَ آخِذٌ بِيَدِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لأَنْتَ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِنْ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ إِلاَّ مِنْ نَفْسِي. فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ” لاَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ نَفْسِكَ ”. فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ فَإِنَّهُ الآنَ وَاللَّهِ لأَنْتَ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِنْ نَفْسِي. فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ” الآنَ يَا عُمَرُ ”.
(صحیح البخاری، كتاب الأيمان والنذور، باب كَيْفَ كَانَتْ يَمِينُ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، حدیث ۶۶۳۲)
`Abdullah bin Hisham(ra) narrated:
We were with the Prophet(sa) and he was holding the hand of `Umar bin Al-Khattab. `Umar said to Him, “O Allah’s Messenger(sa)! You are dearer to me than everything except my own self.” The Prophet(sa) said, “No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, (you will not have complete faith) till I am dearer to you than your own self.” Then `Umar said to him, “However, now, by Allah, you are dearer to me than my own self.” The Prophet(sa) said, “Now, O `Umar, (now you are a believer).

We should therefore increase our knowledge about the life of the Holy Prophet(sa). We should inculcate in ourselves based on that knowledge love, honour and respect for the Holy Prophet(sa) in our hearts, which is a requirement of our faith.
To truly send Darud, we must be conscious of the rank and honour that Allah granted the Holy Prophet Muhammad(sa).
The Promised Messiah(as) stated:
مَیں ہمیشہ تعجب کی نگہ سے دیکھتا ہوں کہ یہ عربی نبی جس کا نام محمد ہے (ہزار ہزار درود اور سلام اُس پر) یہ کس عالی مرتبہ کا نبی ہے۔ اس کے عالی مقام کا انتہا معلوم نہیں ہو سکتا اور اس کی تاثیر قدسی کا اندازہ کرنا انسان کا کام نہیں۔ افسوس کہ جیساحق شناخت کا ہے اُس کے مرتبہ کو شناخت نہیں کیا گیا۔ وہ توحید جو دنیا سے گم ہو چکی تھی وہی ایک پہلوان ہے جو دوبارہ اس کو دنیا میں لایا۔ اُس نے خدا سے انتہائی درجہ پر محبت کی اور انتہائی درجہ پر بنی نوع کی ہمدردی میںؔ اس کی جان گداز ہوئی اِس لئے خدانے جو اُس کے دل کے راز کا واقف تھا اُس کو تمام انبیاء اور تمام اوّلین و آخرین پر فضیلت بخشی اور اُس کی مرادیں اُس کی زندگی میں اُس کو دیں۔ وہی ہے جو سرچشمہ ہر ایک فیض کا ہے اور وہ شخص جو بغیر اقرار افاضہ اُس کے کسی فضیلت کا دعویٰ کرتا ہے۔ وہ انسان نہیں ہے بلکہ ذُرّیّتِ شیطان ہے کیونکہ ہر ایک فضیلت کی کُنجی اُس کو دی گئی ہے اور ہر ایک معرفت کا خزانہ اُس کو عطا کیا گیا ہے۔ جو اُس کے ذریعہ سے نہیں پاتا وہ محروم ازلی ہے۔ ہم کیا چیز ہیں اور ہماری حقیقت کیا ہے۔ ہم کافر نعمت ہوں گے اگر اس بات کا اقرار نہ کریں کہ توحید حقیقی ہم نے اِسی نبی کے ذریعہ سے پائی اور زندہ خدا کی شناخت ہمیں اِسی کامل نبی کے ذریعہ سے اور اسکے نُور سے ملی ہے اور خدا کے مکالمات اور مخاطبات کا شرف بھی جس سے ہم اُس کا چہرہ دیکھتے ہیں اِسی بزرگ نبی کے ذریعہ سے ہمیں میسر آیا ہے ۔۔۔

I always wonder how high was the status of this Arabian Prophet, whose name was Muhammad, (thousands of blessings and peace be upon him). One cannot reach the limit of his high status and it is not given to man to estimate correctly his spiritual effectiveness. It is a pity that his rank has not been recognized, as it should have been. He was the champion who restored to the world the Unity of God which had disappeared from the world; he loved God in the extreme and his soul melted out of sympathy for mankind. Therefore, God, Who knew the secret of his heart, exalted him above all the Prophets and all the first ones and the last ones and bestowed upon him in his lifetime all that he desired.
He is the fountainhead of every grace and a person who claims any superiority without acknowledging his grace is not a man but is the spawn of Satan, because the Holy Prophet has been bestowed the key to every exaltation and he has been given the treasury of every understanding. He who does not receive through him is deprived forever. I am nothing and possess nothing. I would be most ungrateful if I were not to confess that I have learnt of the true Unity of God through this Prophet. The recognition of the Living God we have achieved through this perfect Prophet and through his light. The honour of converse with God, through which we behold His countenance, has been bestowed upon me through this great Prophet.

The Prophet Muhammad(sa) is an “excellent model” of Islamic teachings. His life was based upon high moral principles (68:5), and the Qur’an has in many places mandated Muslims to follow his example.
The Qur’an tells us about the Prophet Muhammad(sa):
وَ اِنَّکَ لَعَلٰی خُلُقٍ عَظِیۡمٍ
And thou dost surely possess high moral excellences. (68:5)
He demonstrated these high moral qualities in all parts of his life, to both friend and foe. So high was the rank of the Prophet Muhammad(sa), that Allah granted him many distinctions that he did not grant any other prophet. It is only for the Holy Prophet(sa) that Allah has declared in the Holy Qur’an:
اِنَّ اللّٰہَ وَ مَلٰٓئِکَتَہٗ یُصَلُّوۡنَ عَلَی النَّبِیِّ ؕ یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا صَلُّوۡا عَلَیۡہِ وَ سَلِّمُوۡا تَسۡلِیۡمًا
Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O ye who believe! you also should invoke blessings on him and salute him with the salutation of peace. (33:57)
That is Allah himself declares that he sends blessings on this prophet and has instructed every believer to seek blessings for him as well until the Day of Judgement.
Why has He told us to do? One of the reasons is that the prophet Muhammad(sa) is so beloved to Allah, that those who send blessings on him will be blessed by Allah, much like how if a person loves a small child, eventually the parents of that child will also begin to love that person.
We should send blessings upon him, keeping in mind his high status and the great pains and lengths he went to teach us Islam. And with a realization that even now it is only possible to come closer to Allah if we have love for him in our heart and follow his footsteps.
The Promised Messiah(as) wrote in one place about why we should love the Holy Prophet(sa) in the following words:
ہمارے سید و مولیٰ حضرت محمد رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا ہی صدق و وفا دیکھئے۔ آپ نے ہر قسم کی بدتحریک کا مقابلہ کیا۔ طرح طرح کے مصائب اٹھائے لیکن پرواہ نہ کی۔ یہی صدق و وفا تھا جس کے باعث اللہ تعالیٰ نے فضل کیا۔ اسی لئے تو اللہ تعالیٰ نے فرمایا ہے۔ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ وَمَلٰٓئِکَتَہٗ یُصَلُّوْنَ عَلَی النَّبِیِّ۔ یٰٓاَیُّھَاالَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا صَلُّوْا عَلَیْہِ وَسَلِّمُوْا تَسْلِیْمًا۔ اللہ تعالیٰ اور اس کے فرشتے رسول پر درود بھیجتے ہیں۔ اے ایمان والو تم درود اور سلام بھیجو نبی پر۔اس آیت سے ظاہر ہوتا ہے کہ رسول اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے اعمال ایسے تھے کہ اللہ تعالیٰ نے ان کی تعریف یا اوصاف کی تحدید کرنے کے لئے کوئی لفظ خاص نہ فرمایا۔ لفظ تو مل سکتے تھے لیکن خود استعمال نہ کئے۔ یعنی آپ کے اعمال صالحہ کی تعریف تحدید سے بیرون تھی۔ اس قسم کی آیت کسی اور نبی کی شان میں استعمال نہ کی۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی روح میں وہ صدق و وفا تھا اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے اعمال خدا کی نگاہ میں اس قدر پسندیدہ تھے کہ اللہ تعالیٰ نے ہمیشہ کے لئے یہ حکم دیا کہ آئندہ لوگ شکر گزاری کے طور پر درود بھیجیں۔

Observe the sincerity and faithfulness of our Holy Prophet(sa) in how he dealt with every evil scheme. He endured all kind of difficulties and hardships but did not pay them any mind. It was owing to this sincerity and faithfulness that Allah the Exalted blessed him and stated: ‘Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O ye who believe! you also invoke blessings on him and salute him with the salutation of peace.’ This verse clearly shows that such were the practices of the Holy Prophet(sa) that Allah the Exalted did not use any special word to praise them or to limit them. Words could be found but were not employed. That is, his blessed practice was far above any limitations. No verse of this kind has been used for the glory of any other Prophet. So sincere and pure was his soul and his practices were so cherished in the sight of God that Allah the Exalted commanded for the rest of time that people should invoke Durud on him by way of gratefulness.’

How do we seek blessings for the Holy Prophet(sa)? When this verse was revealed, the companions of the Holy Prophet(sa) had the very same question. It is narrated in a hadith:
حَدَّثَنَا قَيْسُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ، وَمُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو قُرَّةَ، مُسْلِمُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عِيسَى، سَمِعَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى، قَالَ لَقِيَنِي كَعْبُ بْنُ عُجْرَةَ فَقَالَ أَلاَ أُهْدِي لَكَ هَدِيَّةً سَمِعْتُهَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّ، صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقُلْتُ بَلَى، فَأَهْدِهَا لِي. فَقَالَ سَأَلْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ عَلَّمَنَا كَيْفَ نُسَلِّمُ. قَالَ “ قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ ”.

Narrated `Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Laila(ra):
Ka`b bin Ujrah met me and said, “Shall I not give you a present I got from the Prophet?” `Abdur- Rahman said, “Yes, give it to me.” I said, “We asked Allah’s Messenger(sa) saying, ‘O Allah’s Messenger(sa)! How should one (ask Allah to) send blessings on you, the members of the family, for Allah has taught us how to salute you (in the prayer)?’ He said, ‘Say:
‘Allahumma salli alaa Muhammadin wa alaa aali Muhammadin kamaa sallaita alaa Ibraheema wa alaa aali Ibraheema innaka Hameedum Majeed. Allahumma baarik alaa Muhammadin wa alaa aali Muhammadin kamaa baarakta alaa Ibraheema wa alaa aali Ibraheema innaka Hameedum Majeed.’
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, the Book of the Stories of the Prophets, Hadith #3370)
That is, O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.’ “
This prayer is known as Darud Sharif or Assalaatu alan-Nabiyy. To recite this prayer is an essential part of our faith. Under the conditions of Bai’at written by the Promised Messiah(as), the third condition states:
That he/she shall regularly offer the five daily prayers in accordance with the commandments of God and the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); and shall try his/her best to be regular in offering the Tahajud (pre-dawn supererogatory prayers) and invoking Darood (blessings) on the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); that he/she shall make it his/her daily routine to ask forgiveness for his/her sins, to remember the bounties of God and to praise and glorify Him.
The Darud that we send upon the Prophet Muhammad(sa) should be heart-felt. The Promised Messiah(as) stated in a letter to one of his companions:
آپ درود شریف کے پڑھنے میں بہت ہی متوجہ رہیں اور جیسا کہ کوئی اپنے پیارے کے لئے فی الحقیقت برکت چاہتا ہے ایسے ہی ذوق اور اخلاص سے حضرت نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے لئے برکت چاہیں اور بہت ہی تضرع سے چاہیں اور اس تضرع اور دعا میں کچھ بناوٹ نہ ہو بلکہ چاہئے کہ حضرت نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سچی دوستی اور محبت ہو اور فی الحقیقت روح کی سچائی سے وہ برکتیں آنحضرت صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے لئے مانگی جائیں کہ جو درود شریف میں مذکور ہیں … اور ذاتی محبت کی یہ نشانی ہے کہ انسان کبھی نہ تھکے اور نہ ملول ہو اور نہ اغراض نفسانی کا دخل ہو (ذاتی غرض کوئی نہ ہو)۔ اور محض اسی غرض کے لئے پڑھے کہ آنحضرت صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم پر خداوند کریم کے برکات ظاہر ہوں۔

Stay intensely focused in invoking Durood and seek blessings for the Holy Prophet(sa) with the same sincerity and discernment with which one seeks blessings for a dear one. Seek with great humility and there should be no pretense in this humility and prayer. Rather pray for the Holy Prophet(sa) with the spirit of true friendship and love. Seek those blessings with sincere heart and soul for the Holy Prophet(sa) which are inherent in Durood. It is a sign of personal love that one never tires, is not disheartened and invokes Durood with no involvement of vested interests and only recites it for Divine blessings for the Holy Prophet(sa).

There are many blessings associated with the act of Darud. We should be conscious of them and consequently feel even more inclined towards reciting this prayer to better our relationship with Allah.
We should not think that offering the Durood Sharif is in some way necessary for the Holy Prophet(sa). It is in fact to help us that Allah has taught us to pray for him. The Holy Prophet(sa) once stated:
“يا أيها الناس أنجاكم يوم القيامة من أهوالها ومواطنها أكثركم علي صلاة في دار الدنيا، إنه قد كان في الله وملائكته كفاية إذ يقول: {إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ} الآية فأمر بذلك المؤمنين ليثيبهم عليه”. (الديلمي عن أنس)
(کنز العمال، الكتاب الثاني من حرف الهمزة: في الأذكار من قسم الأقوال ، لباب السادس: في الصلاة عليه وعلى آله عليه الصلاة والسلام ، حدیث ۲۲۲۸)
O people, on the Day of Judgement those who will be most worthy of salvation from it’s fear and risks will be those who most sent Durood upon me during their lives. Certainly, the blessings of Allah and His angels was sufficient for me as is mentioned in the verse, “Certainly Allah and His angels call down blessings on the Prophet”. But Allah ordered the believers to do as well so that they may be rewarded because of it.

The Prophet Muhammad(sa) admonished those that were not in the habit of sending Darud upon him:
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُوسَى، وَزِيَادُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ الْعَقَدِيُّ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بِلاَلٍ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم “ الْبَخِيلُ الَّذِي مَنْ ذُكِرْتُ عِنْدَهُ فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَىَّ ” . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ .
(جامع الترمذی، كتاب الدعوات عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، باب قَوْلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ” رَغِمَ أَنْفُ رَجُلٍ، حدیث ۳۵۴۶)
`Ali bin Abi Talib(ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah(sa) said:
“The stingy person is the one before whom I am mentioned, and he does not send Salat upon me.”

The Darud Sharif is an essential part of our daily prayers. It is a necessary part of the acceptance of prayers. It is mentioned in a hadith:
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا رِشْدِينُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هَانِئٍ الْخَوْلاَنِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ الْجَنْبِيِّ، عَنْ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، قَالَ بَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَاعِدًا إِذْ دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ فَصَلَّى فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهَ صلى الله عليه وسلم ” عَجِلْتَ أَيُّهَا الْمُصَلِّي إِذَا صَلَّيْتَ فَقَعَدْتَ فَاحْمَدِ اللَّهَ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ وَصَلِّ عَلَىَّ ثُمَّ ادْعُهُ ” . قَالَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَجُلٌ آخَرُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَصَلَّى عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ” أَيُّهَا الْمُصَلِّي ادْعُ تُجَبْ ” . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ رَوَاهُ حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هَانِئٍ الْخَوْلاَنِيِّ وَأَبُو هَانِئٍ اسْمُهُ حُمَيْدُ بْنُ هَانِئٍ وَأَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْجَنْبِيُّ اسْمُهُ عَمْرُو بْنُ مَالِكٍ .

Fadalah bin `Ubaid(ra) narrated:
“While the Messenger of Allah(sa) was seated, a man entered and performed Salat, and he said: ‘O Allah, forgive me, and have mercy upon me.’ The Messenger of Allah(sa) said: ‘You have rushed, O praying person. When you perform Salat and then sit, then praise Allah with what He is deserving of, and send Salat upon me, then call upon Him.’” He said: “Then another man performed Salat after that, so he praised Allah and sent Salat upon the Prophet(sa). The Prophet(sa) said to him: ‘O praying person! Supplicate, and you shall be answered.’”

The Day of Judgement will be a terrible day, where there will be no refuge other than the refuge of Allah. Many will be honoured and many will be debased. The Holy Prophet(sa) guaranteed that the person that is most regular in offering Darud will be closest to him on the Day of Judgement, and therefore safe from the calamity of that day:
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، بُنْدَارٌ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَالِدِ ابْنُ عَثْمَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي مُوسَى بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الزَّمْعِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ كَيْسَانَ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ شَدَّادٍ، أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ” أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَكْثَرُهُمْ عَلَىَّ صَلاَةً ” . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ . وَرُوِيَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ قَالَ ” مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَىَّ صَلاَةً صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ بِهَا عَشْرًا وَكَتَبَ لَهُ بِهَا عَشْرَ حَسَنَاتٍ ”

Abdullah bin Mas’ud(ra) narrated that:
Allah’s Messenger said: “The person closest to me on the Day of Judgement is the one who sent the most Salat upon me.”

The Darud Sharif is a way to gain blessings, wipe out our faults and elevate our spiritual rank:
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ بُرَيْدِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم “ مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَىَّ صَلاَةً وَاحِدَةً صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ عَشْرَ صَلَوَاتٍ وَحُطَّتْ عَنْهُ عَشْرُ خَطِيئَاتٍ وَرُفِعَتْ لَهُ عَشْرُ دَرَجَاتٍ ”

Anas bin Malik said:
“The Messenger of Allah(sa) said: “Whoever sends salah upon me once, Allah will send salah upon him tenfold, and will erase ten sins from him, and will raise him ten degrees in status.”

The Promised Messiah(as) was witness to the great blessings linked with Darud. He writes in one place:
ایک رات اس عاجز نے اس کثرت سے درود شریف پڑھا کہ دل و جان اس سے معطر ہوگیا۔ اسی رات خواب میں دیکھا کہ آب زلال کی شکل پر نور کی مشکیں اس عاجز کے مکان میں لئے آتے ہیں۔ اور ایک نے ان میں سے کہا کہ یہ وہی برکات ہیں جو تو نے محمد کی طرف بھیجی تھیں صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم۔

One night this humble one invoked blessings on the Holy Prophet [peace and blessings of Allah be on him] to such a degree that my heart and soul were filled with its fragrance. That night I saw in my dream that angels were carrying water skins full of light into my house and one of them said to me: These are the blessings that you invoked upon Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allah be on him].

How much Darud should we offer? The more Darud that we offer, the more Allah will himself take care of our affairs and the more He will forgive us. It is narrated in a hadith:
حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ، عَنِ الطُّفَيْلِ بْنِ أُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا ذَهَبَ ثُلُثَا اللَّيْلِ قَامَ فَقَالَ ” يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ جَاءَتِ الرَّاجِفَةُ تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ جَاءَ الْمَوْتُ بِمَا فِيهِ جَاءَ الْمَوْتُ بِمَا فِيهِ ” . قَالَ أُبَىٌّ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أُكْثِرُ الصَّلاَةَ عَلَيْكَ فَكَمْ أَجْعَلُ لَكَ مِنْ صَلاَتِي فَقَالَ ” مَا شِئْتَ ” . قَالَ قُلْتُ الرُّبُعَ . قَالَ ” مَا شِئْتَ فَإِنْ زِدْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ ” . قُلْتُ النِّصْفَ . قَالَ ” مَا شِئْتَ فَإِنْ زِدْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ ” . قَالَ قُلْتُ فَالثُّلُثَيْنِ . قَالَ ” مَا شِئْتَ فَإِنْ زِدْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ ” . قُلْتُ أَجْعَلُ لَكَ صَلاَتِي كُلَّهَا . قَالَ ” إِذًا تُكْفَى هَمَّكَ وَيُغْفَرُ لَكَ ذَنْبُكَ ” . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ

At-Tufail bin Ubayy bin Ka’b(ra) narrated from his father who said:
“When a third of the night had passed, the Messenger of Allah(sa) stood and said: ‘O you people! Remember Allah! Remember Allah! The Rajifah is coming, followed by the Radifah, death and what it brings is coming, death and what it brings is coming!'” Ubayy said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Indeed I say very much Salat for you. How much of my Salat should I make for you?’ He said: ‘As you wish.'” [He said:] “I said: ‘A fourth?’ He said: ‘As you wish. But if you add more it would be better for you.’ I said: ‘Then half?’ He said: ‘As you wish. And if you add more it would be better [for you].'” [He said:] “I said: ‘Then two-thirds? ‘He said: ‘As you wish, but if you add more it would be better for you.’ I said: ‘Should I make all of my Salat for you?’ He said: ‘Then your problems would be solved and your sins would be forgiven.'”

Darud Sharif is thus an essential part of the life of a Muslim. There is no other person upon which so many blessings are sought, and in consequence of which so many blessings are reaped. The Promised Messiah(as) writes:
وہ انسان جو سب سے زیادہ کامل اور انسان کامل تھا اور کامل نبی تھا اور کامل برکتوں کے ساتھ آیا جس سے روحانی بعث اور حشر کی وجہ سے دنیا کی پہلی قیامت ظاہر ہوئی اور ایک عالم کا عالم مَرا ہوا اس کے آنے سے زندہ ہو گیا وہ مبارک نبی حضرت خاتم الانبیاء امام الاصفیاء ختم المرسلین فخر النبیین جناب محمد مصطفےٰ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہیں۔ اے پیارے خدا اس پیارے نبی پر وہ رحمت اور درود بھیج جو ابتداء دنیا سے تُو نے کسی پر نہ بھیجا ہو۔ اگر یہ عظیم الشان نبی دنیا میں نہ آتا تو پھر جس قدر چھوٹے چھوٹے نبی دنیا میں آئے جیسا کہ یونس اور ایوب اور مسیح بن مریم اور ملاکی اور یحییٰ اور ذکریا وغیرہ وغیرہ ان کی سچائی پر ہمارے پاس کوئی بھی دلیل نہیں تھی اگرچہ سب مقرب اور وجیہ اور خداتعالیٰ کے پیارے تھے۔ یہ اُس نبی کا احسان ہے کہ یہ لوگ بھی دنیا میں سچے سمجھے گئے۔ اللّٰھم صل وسلّم و بارک علیہ و اٰٰلہ و اصحابہ اجمعین و اٰخر دعوانا ان الحمد للّٰہ ربّ العٰلمین۔

The man who in his being and his attributes and his actions and through his spiritual and holy faculties set an example of perfection, in knowledge and action and in sincerity and steadfastness, and was called the perfect man was Muhammad [peace and blessings of Allah be on him]…. The man who was most perfect as man and as Prophet, and came with full blessings, and who through a spiritual revival and resurrection manifested the first Judgement in the world and revived the dead world, that blessed Prophet, the Seal of the Prophets, the leader of the righteous ones, the pride of the Prophets, was Muhammad, the chosen one [peace and blessings of Allah be on him]. Our Lord, send down on that beloved Prophet that mercy and blessing that Thou hast not sent down on anyone since the beginning of the world. Had that grand Prophet not appeared in the world then we would have no proof of the truth of lesser Prophets like Jonah, Job, Jesus son of Mary, Malachi, John, Zechariah, etc. Though they were favourites and honoured and were beloved ones of Almighty God, they are under obligation to this Prophet that they were accepted in the world as true Prophets.
O Allah, send down Thy blessings on him and on his people and on his companions, all of them. Our last word is that all praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
