Serving Humanity – The Path to a Living Legacy in the Sight of God

What am I leaving behind. Foam or water. Noise or signal (benefit). A fleeting trace or a lasting impact.

Serving humanity is among the highest forms of pleasing God. It is not a peripheral teaching. It is central to the moral and spiritual order established by Allah. The one who benefits others becomes a means of lasting good. The one who harms becomes like foam that vanishes.

Allah the Exalted gives a powerful illustration: He sends down water from the sky so that valleys begin to flow according to their capacity, and the flood carries swelling foam on its surface. In the same way foam comes up from that which they heat up in the fire, for the purpose of making ornaments or articles of domestic use. Thus does Allah illustrate truth and falsehood. The foam passes off like froth, and that which benefits people stays on in the earth. Thus does Allah expound all things. (Ar Rad 13:18)

This verse presents a deep law of life. Truth is like water. It nourishes. It sustains. Falsehood is like foam. It rises for a moment. Then it disappears. What remains is only that which brings benefit to mankind.

The same principle applies to human lives. That which benefits people stays on in the earth. It is true that the life of one who benefits others is prolonged, while one who spreads harm is removed sooner. This is not merely biological life. It is a life of impact. A life of istimrar ( continuity). A life that continues through others.

The Holy Prophet(sa) is the greatest example. The Promised Messiah(as) in his commentary of this verse says : Some claim that his lifespan was short. This claim fails to understand the purpose of life. He fulfilled his mission completely. He witnessed the perfection of religion. The declaration Al yawma akmaltu lakum dinakum “Today I have perfected your religion for you” (Al Ma’idah 5:4) was granted to him alone. He saw success with his own eyes.

His influence did not end with his physical life. His beneficence continues in every age. His teachings guide hearts across centuries. For this reason he is called a living Prophet. His life is extended through the lives he transformed. The purpose of long life was fulfilled in the most complete sense.

The principle extends beyond prophets. Every righteous person who serves humanity partakes in this dawam meaning lasting continuity. The hadith captures it with precision:

khayru n nasi man yanfa u n nas meaning the best of people are those who are most beneficial to people.

Even opposition can serve this divine plan. The Promised Messiah(as) explained that some opponents are granted long lives because they too serve a purpose. Their objections lead to deeper truths. Their resistance sharpens arguments. Their existence becomes indirectly beneficial. Consider that Abu Jahl lived until the Battle of Badr. The real point is that if opponents had not raised objections, many parts of the Holy Quran would not have been revealed  Whomever Allah the Exalted considers useful, He grants them respite. He gave the example that if his opponents had not raised objections and caused turmoil, important works defending Islam would not have been written. Thus even conflict, when it leads to truth, becomes a form of service within divine wisdom. Another way of looking at it is that God’s mercy is an over riding attribute. He allows time to people to repent.

The Promised Messiah(as) said it is stated in hadith that in his time lifespans would increase. This does not mean death will cease. It means that those who sincerely serve the faith and humanity will be granted longer lives. Why. Because they are beneficial. And Allah has promised that what benefits mankind remains.

This law is also reflected in the cycles of spiritual history: Hast not thou seen that Allah sends down water from the sky, then causes it to flow in the earth in streams, and then brings forth thereby herbage, varying in colors. Then it dries up and turns yellow; then He reduces it to broken straw. In that surely is a reminder for those possessed of understanding. (Az Zumar 39:22)

When the world becomes spiritually barren, divine revelation descends like rain. It revives hearts. It produces righteous people. They nourish others. Overtime decline sets in. Then again, a reformer appears. The cycle continues.

In every cycle, the same truth stands firm. Only that which benefits humanity endures. Service is not just a moral virtue. It is a divine law. It is the path to acceptance. It is the means of true life.

A person must therefore ask. What am I leaving behind. Foam or water. Noise or signal (benefit). A fleeting trace or a lasting impact.

The answer to that question determines not only the value of one’s life. It determines its length in the sight of God.
